Does this Roof Look Right? VOTE!

by Osman Parvez
----
A roof is an expensive item to replace.

A neighbor recently had his replaced and wasn't pleased with the results. He's looking for some feedback. If you have a moment, please take a look at the photos and vote in the poll at the bottom of this post. If you have anything else to share, feel free to leave a comment as well.

This is what he wrote on our neighborhood email list:

We had a new roof put on our house and garage this Monday and Tuesday. The workers and bosses didn't inspire much confidence; poor communication, half-hearted clean-up, and brushed off questions. It seemed they just wanted to get it done and leave.

The garage bottom layer was very wet when they laid the shingles on...it now looks uneven. Would anybody with roofing experience be able to take a quick look and let us know if it was an acceptable job?

Here are the pics we took this morning:

  1. Dimensional shingles take some time to settle.

My concern with the way the shingles are laid would be - how they're layered creates a lot of air pockets where wind could get under shingles and start lifting them (depending on the orientation of your house with respect to the mountains) in one the chinooks or bora's that we get regularly here.

In the pictures the shingle appear to overlap – which keeps water from getting under them. Is there anything between the roof sheathing and the shingles? (paper, felt, membrane etc.?)
    .......
I was walking my dog and passed your house as they were replacing your roof. There was some black paper over the roof on both your house and garage. The next time I walked by, the shingles were there.

I don't know his availability, but Steve xxxx reshingled my roof. He's got roofing patents and does a great job. He was also $7000 less expensive than the next bid. He was referred to me by a friend who's roof he also replaced a few years ago. 720-xxx-xxxx

    ........

Photos can be deceving, would need to come by for eval..
    Questions:
What type/style/brand # years warranty, of shingles were installed?,
Are there 1 or more layers of old shingles under the new?
Was there rotted roof shething replaced?
Was the job inspected, both during and after the installation?
Did you accept the lowest bid?

  3. Everyone's an expert, right? Bad idea, this survey. Get a contractor friend, an architect, or some other qualified person to give an opinion in person. Do-gooder Boulderites will side with the homeowner every time over the "crooked" contractors. Not all contractors are crooks, and bad communication does not directly correlate to a bad job. Get a pro to look at it, ignore this silly poll....
